Who do you believe that God is? I’m not asking who you think He is, but rather who you believe He is. There is a difference. You can read God’s Word, come across a description of God, and add it to your theology of who you think God is, but until you really experience Him as that characteristic you don’t necessarily believe that is who He is.
Why is really believing the truth about who God is an important and crucial step in becoming a good mom? Because knowing who God is takes your confidence off of yourself and puts it on Him. When you discover that He is your refuge, for example, you will run to Him when life is pressing in. When seemingly bad things happen you will be assured that God is good all of the time.
We need to know that God is the same yesterday today and forever. His character stays the same. So, the things that are true about Him are always true about Him. He is ALWAYS love, ALWAYS good, ALWAYS just, ALWAYS faithful, ALWAYS holy, ALWAYS our deliverer and strong tower of refuge…
So how do we start to believe who God is? By reading His Word and studying His character but also by letting Him reveal those things to us. We can simply ask Him to show us who He is.
Often times our childhood or circumstances in our lives shape how we see God. If you had a father who was harsh or hard to please you may unconsciously perceive God to be the same way. If you felt like you had to work to earn your father’s love then you may believe that you have to keep working and doing good before God will love you.
Our life experiences shape how we see God. He wants to shake up any lies we have believed and reveal the truth to us. He wants us to walk in truth and freedom.
So, I would encourage you to take some time this week to ask God what He wants you to know about Him. Be still and listen for His voice to speak truth to your heart. Then you will begin to know Him and believe who He says that He is.
Knowing the truth about who God is is like a brick wall being built around you. Each brick of truth is laid one at a time and held together with mortar of confidence in Him. As more bricks are added the wall grows higher. The more truth you know, the higher your defense against lies and attack become. When the enemy comes against you with fear that your God is not good, or faithful, or your defender, you already have a defense system in place that knows the truth and easily recognizes the lies. The wall goes with you wherever you go and you begin to be able to help others build these walls of truth as well.
All of the words listed in the picture above are found in scripture as descriptions of who God is. There are lots more too but this is a start. Read over them and consider of each one and if you really believe it to be true of God. If not, there is no shame or condemnation. Only magnificent grace that today you can begin to believe the truth. Ask God to show you Himself as each one of these things.
If you would like to share what God is showing you, or how you know that He is who He says He is, I would encourage you to leave a comment here. We can encourage one another and pray for each other to begin to see God as He really is.
Be blessed friends! Sit quiet in His love for a while today and let your heart be refreshed and your burdens lifted.
