Panic attacks are awful and no one wants to live with them. There are no quick fixes but there are some things that can ultimately help to cure panic attacks. The things listed below were life savers to me and ultimately helped to end my panic attacks for good.
I wrote a previous post about How to Cure Panic Attacks and if there’s one post I’ve written that I wish would get almost zero traffic it is that one because I wish that no one had to suffer with them. Unfortunately that post has been one of my most popular and repinned post. I feel for you immensely and hate that so many of you are going through these awful attacks.
Since I wrote the previous post I have discovered some things that are a huge help in the search to cure panic attacks. I wanted to share these things with you here. If you haven’t read the first post I suggest you take a few minutes to read it. It is what helped me tremendously to begin to retrain my body to not go into fight or flight mode when there was no immediate threat.
After writing the first post I later went through a time when I began having panic attacks again due to being on too high of a dose of my thyroid medication. My doctor discovered that the dose was too high and took me off the medicine but the anxiety and panic attacks took several more weeks to go away. During that time I found several things that helped me deal with and even prevent the attacks. Since that time I haven’t had any more panic attacks. It’s been nearly a year now that I have been panic attack free.
I must give a disclaimer. I am not a doctor or giving medical advice here. I just want to share with you what I have learned through my own trial and error, research and discovery. Please consult your doctor before taking any supplements or trying any of my recommendations.
Panic attacks can have a lot to do with what we fear and how we handle those fears but they also seem to be a result of our physical make-up. I discovered that the more tired and stressed I was the more I would tend to have them. Sometimes a missing nutrient or too much caffeine, sugar or other stimulants seemed to contribute to their frequency and intensity.
Works to PREVENT Panic Attacks
Holy Basil – If you can try only 1 thing this is what I recommend. I came across Holy Basil in my research on the nervous system. It helps relieve stress and keep you calm. I take this brand and take 1 in the morning before eating and one at night before bed. It took a couple of weeks to kick in but this stuff is amazing (read the reviews on Amazon). I would advise any one I know dealing with anxiety to try it at least for a month and see if it helps.
Ashwaganda – this is another supplement that helps your body fight stress. It works well with Holy Basil to keep you from having panic attacks. Read the instructions on how to take it and for how long.
Vitamin B Supplements – B vitamins help your energy levels and if fatigue or stress are effecting you a B vitamin supplement can help.
Vitamin B3 – This is a great article about how vitamin B3 can help to cure anxiety in patients with a mutation in their genes. This mutation affects close to 1 in 5 people and could be the cause of your anxiety and panic attacks.
Works to STOP Panic Attacks Once They’ve Started
Essential Oils – If you are having panic attacks regularly out of the blue and need something to stop them quickly once they start I cannot recommend essential oils enough. I did a lot of research into these natural, God-given, plant oils and the properties in them that help the nervous system. Before I share the ones that helped me to stop a panic attack in its tracks I want to tell you that, as a Christian, I believe it is very dangerous to put anything before God and trust in anything more than Him. The Holy Spirit is our comforter. I cannot tell you how many times I was going through a panic attack and felt God’s presence so strongly with me in it. He doesn’t always promise to take away our struggles but He is always with us in them.
I use Young Living oils and the ones I recommend are:
Nutmeg – This oil stopped a panic attack as soon as it started for me. Nutmeg helps to calm your nervous system. I would put a drop or two in my hand and rub it on the soles of my feet and cup my hands under my nose and inhale a few times slowly.
Ylang Ylang – This is another oil that is supposed to sooth anxiety. I didn’t use it on its own a lot because I used oil blends (like the two I mention below) that have it in them but this oil on its own will work wonders too.
Peace & Calming – I love the Peace and Calming oil. I use it often when life is busy and full. If I ever felt tired and like I was prone to an anxiety attack I would use this and they wouldn’t come on.
Joy – This one is my favorite oil. It smells like a beautiful perfume and has some of the great calming and anxiety reducing oils in it. I wear it often and often get compliments on the scent.
Young Living oils are purchased through consultants. I have a consultant account (because I love them so much and use them every day in multiple ways). So, if you want more information or want to order any feel free to email me: Kristin@thebeautifuldeep.com. Otherwise, ask a trusted consultant.
Breathing Exercises
Another thing that greatly helped me in the midst of a panic attack was to begin these special breathing exercises. I learned about them through an article, which I cannot remember the source for now, but below is a video that shows the technique that helped me.
I hope that some of these tips help you in your quest to overcome panic attacks. Again, if you haven’t yet read my first post I highly encourage you to read it now.
I’d love to hear what has helped you or what you’ve tried before in the comments. If this post has helped you in any way I would love for you to share it with the buttons below so that others who struggle with anxiety and panic attacks may find help as well. I pray that God heals you and that you feel encouraged that there is hope and help in the midst of this struggle.
