Overcoming adversity has been this girl’s middle

Overcoming adversity has been this girl’s middle name lately. Life has thrown her all kinds of trials and she’s put her head down and carried on. I’m so proud of how brave she’s been. She has worked hard and has been so tough. She’s thrilled to be playing volleyball for one of the best clubs in the nation with great coaches and teammates.

Kayla, our oldest, has been a delight to watch as she’s pursued her dreams and calling. She persisted in getting into the art school she wanted to go to even though they told her all the community college credits she had earned wouldn’t count and she’d have to start all over again at year one. Through the pandemic, living 1,400 miles away from home, and taking new risks, I’ve watched her develop perseverance and a deep dependence on God. We’re so proud of her! Congratulations on your BFA in Experimental Animation from Laguna College of Art and Design, Kayla!

Kayla, I have loved watching you become such a beautiful and lovely person. You are magnetic to other people as you love and care so deeply for them. Your art is a reflection of your love for God and others. I cannot even begin to explain the beauty of watching you create in such a unique way that shares how you see people, how you love God and how you long to see people know God’s love for them. I’ve been in awe of your art since you were a tiny little girl and I pray that your heart and creativity continues to be cultivated throughout your lifetime. You are brilliant and you shine bright. Keep sharing the gifts you have because they bless others immensely. I know you are living a life of great impact and will continue to make this world a more compassionate and lovely place. I love you and am so glad to have you as a dear friend.

This kid melts my heart. Seriously, I don’t think he knows how much power he holds to turn me into a puddle of mush. We moved him into his college dorm today and all I can think about are all these precious memories of his thick, boy fingers clinging to mine when we walked to his pre school class. Or the vroom, vroom noises he made when playing with cars. Or the way he would break dance without a care in the world to a fun upbeat song. Or finding him sleeping in a chair after staying up all night for a coding competition. Or the way he wraps his sisters up in his arms with big bear hugs. See - mush. Anthony, you are a joy and for as much as I can’t believe (and am in a little bit of denial) that you’re are old enough to be starting college, I’m so proud of you and know you’ll do great things! I love you @a_lemus_!!

Can you tell we’re happy and proud of him? This kid blesses my heart so much. He’s worked so hard and overcome some incredible obstacles. I know he’s going to do great thing’s going forward.

There’s no way to measure the love of a mom. A million big and little ways they give of themselves over a lifetime to make sure we’re taken care of and loved. Thousands of prayers lifted on our behalf both short and sweet and agonizingly gut wrenching. I’m so thankful for a mom that loves me and continues to bless my life. Happy Mother’s Day @sheryarm!

Yesterday we celebrated @rachaeljgilbert’s book launch of Image Restored. I’m so proud of Rachael! I know that she has worked incredibly hard and given her all to this book. You are going to want to read it! The book is a deep dive into body image. P.S. if you have a dream in your heart get yourself a friend group that cheers you on and prays fervently for you. These women right here are dream midwives and I will forever treasure their friendship.

Forty-five. I’ve noticed something about life

Forty-five.

I’ve noticed something about life in different decades. Mostly that we’re all longing to be seen and known and loved.

In our twenties we’re figuring out who we are and dreaming big dreams.

In our thirties we are fighting to be our true selves and battling to not give up on our dreams.

In our forties we’ve seen some dreams come true and there’s a whole new battle to not slip away and become obsolete, to not give up because life hasn’t turned out how we thought.

Can I just say something to all of us? Don’t give up. You are precious. Your life matters and your dreams are a gift. Even if you’ve found yourself in a pit and nowhere near where you thought you’d be. Keep seeking healing and health and to show up just how you are made. 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond.
