Welcome to Day 2 in our 31 Day Series on Becoming an excellent {not perfect} mother. If you missed yesterday’s post or want to find all of the posts you can find them all here. On to today’s post…
In order to pursue excellence let’s get first things first.
In mothering there is a lot that can overwhelm, and seem to overpower you as you struggle to do it right. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. Start here: Seek God first. Seek His Kingdom and His will and everything else will be taken care of.
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33
It’s a lie to think that we will be able to get enough done or become good enough at mothering to not need God to be first in our lives. I really wish I would have understood this earlier.
Most of my earliest mothering days were spent being encouraged by moms who assured me that God understood how busy I was and that I didn’t have much time for Him. He does understand how busy we are. And He is full of grace for mommies but what I didn’t know is that when I would seek Him first He would give me everything else I needed. He would order my steps and my days and give me the strength I needed to make it through the day with little ones.
Moms, you are powerful in the lives of your children and the enemy would like nothing more than for you to believe that you don’t have time to seek God first in your life. The truth is that you don’t have time to do anything else. Nothing else you do will be in the right order if God isn’t first in your life.
So how do you put God first? It’s not measured in time spent. It’s not about how much of the Bible you read. It’s about surrendering your heart and meeting with your Savior. Let Him order your day and fill you up. Be still for a few moments to know that He is God. If the mountains melt like wax in before the Lord, then surely your problems will.
“The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth.” Psalms 97:5
How can you begin to connect with God and seek Him first today? Do you think you’ve had a misconception about the benefits or the effort of putting God first?
If you’d like to go a little deeper into the how and why of putting first things first you can read this post here. Thanks for joining me on day 2 of our 31 day journey! See you tomorrow.

I have been working at putting God first every morning as soon as I wake up after taking care of our 5 month old. I let our son sleep a little longer and do my Bible studies, listen to my preacher online, and talk to Jesus and that really sets my day up for greatness. I notice if I wait until later in the day to do Bible study and get into the Word then my day doesn’t go so well. I am so lucky that I can read blogs from great women like you so I can deepen myself more in who I am in God. Learning and growing as a child of God and mother. Thank you so much!

This is confirmation from my thoughts yesterday as I was dropping off my children to their Wednesday connection classes at church “I have lost touch…how can I connect with my God that loves me so much. ” Thank you SO much for this post!

I love this! It is so true that when we make time for Him first everything else falls in place. This is a wonderful reminder!

Thank you Jennifer! I need this reminder myself often. It is all too easy to slip into living life on my own strength even though it doesn’t get me very far. I’m so thankful that God keeps calling us back to His heart and His ways. Blessings, Kristin
